When Winston Churchill's thoroughly poisonous son Randolph was discharged from hospital after the excision of what turned out, unexpectedly, to be a benign tumour, Evelyn Waugh remarked,to the delight of Whites club lunchers, 'Typical, they discovered the only non-malignant part of Randolph then threw it away'. PG Wodehouse,an intuitive libertarian nonpareil, loved this story but, having created a parallel universe of English 'niceness', found it impossible to include in his fictional world.

The late Dennis Potter, whose turgid works of Marxist 'social realism' polluted the BBC's teleplay airtime in the long-ago, named his demise-inducing cancer 'Rupert'. This was Potter's last stand against Mr Murdoch, the only man (Eddie Shah excepted) brave enough to engage Britain's corrupt print unions in battle.Given that Dickson's cancer has, thank Clapton, amounted to nothing, perhaps he might retrospectively name it 'wee Stuart'.

Dear David and Neil

A cantie Yuil, a hertie Hogmanay, an a guid new year tae ane an aw!

My partner is most envious of Iris & Fern's mummy. She requested a cat (umpteen times) for Christmas. It didnae happen.

Thank you for introducing me to the world of blogging this year David. It has, primarily, been a pleasant diversion. I bought my first computer this spring since a 356 I had purchased in 1991! Broadband too: bit of a baptism of fire. I didn't even know what a blog was.

This whole year has been a counter-offensive against cancer, so we got the computer primarily to entertain me and keep in touch with family and friends while I was stuck at home. Your site served a good purpose. Happily I have the all-clear and I recommence work again full-time from next month. I still intend to be a regular reader of your generally good journalism.

I wish your site every success in the future, and hope you manage to shake-off the occasional gremlin.
